Helen Delilah (Griffin) Johnson, 85, of Manchester, CT entered into eternal rest, early Sunday morning, (November 20, 2011) surrounded by her loving family. Helen was born in Manchester, CT on March 21, 1926. She was the daughter of the late John J.R. Griffin and Helen Irene (Burke) Griffin. Helen leaves her sister, Rachel Priscilla (Griffin) Kheradjou of Bethesda, MD and her two sons and daughters in law, Charles T. and Wendy L. Griffin of Glastonbury, Brendan M. and Mary H. Johnson of Afton, VA; daughter and son in law Tracy J. and James B. Newmark of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Eric C. Johnson, Jennifer T. Kinne, Robert P. Kinne, III, and Lawson H. Johnson, Jessica L. Rounseville, Ian K. Rounseville, David J. Newmark and his wife Judith, Brian M. Newmark, and Cathleen F. Newmark; two cherished great grandchildren, Charisma and Kira Newmark as well as many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Helen was predeceased by her former husband Charles T. Johnson of Manchester on November 9, 2011, their infant son Brian J. Johnson, and her sister Prudence Nancy (Griffin) Alley of Bloomfield, CT. Helen attended Westbrook Junior College in Portland, ME and worked for many years as the bookkeeper for Dr. Albert Rubin in Manchester, CT. She was a longtime member of the American Legion's Women's Auxiliary as well as being very involved with school and church organizations of St. Bartholomew and St. James in Manchester, CT. She was an avid reader of astronomy, space exploration, science fiction, and spy thrillers. She enjoyed opera and spending time with her family. Calling hours are from 4pm to 7pm at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, on November 22, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 10am on Wednesday, November 23rd at the funeral home followed by a burial at St. James Cemetery, 368 Broad St., Manchester. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made in Helen's memory to The American Cancer Society, 825 Brook Street, I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 as Helen was a 33 year colon cancer survivor.
