Obituary of Ronald Poulin

Ronald Paul Poulin (Ronnie), aged 70 died on August 12, 2018 due to a short bout of aggressive lung cancer, following prior health issues throughout his final years. His last breath was taken at the Veterans Home in Rocky Hill, Connecticut located at 287 West Street.

Ron was the youngest in the family born February 9th,1948 in Hartford, Connecticut to Leopold Poulin Sr.and Simone (Pourier) Poulin. His siblings include Delores Lemelin, Carol (Patricia) Grimes, Leopold Poulin Jr., and Richard Poulin.

He was a very accomplished man from the very beginning. During his childhood, he and Jim D’Amato became closer than blood brothers for over half a century. His devotion to Ron was unparalleled. Ron graduated from Buckley High School in 1966. He attended classes at Hartford Junior College in Law Enforcement, and Radiological Monitoring. He earned more than just a locksmithing degree, receiving his United States Coast Guard license and completed his United States Power Squadron boating course. He then graduated from the Institute of Applied Science.

He served into the Army in 1967 with the HMS 27th Main Battalion of the 1st Cavalry division as a machine operator. He was stationed in Vietnam in 1968, traveling to Da.Nang and other major cities, ending in 1969. He was honorably discharged, achieving medals in more than one area. He bravely decided to serve as a public Hartford Police Officer for almost a decade.

He balanced married life with work when he married the love of his life, MaryLou Poulin in 1971. They shared their lives together until the same illness took her life in 2006. They had a single daughter together, Diane in 1976. He ambitiously built up a Charter boat business in 1975, eventually adding the Brothers Oil company in 1978 with his brother, Leo. Due to a boom in business, Leo took care of the boating half, and Ron managed to keep the oil business on track. Using experiences from life on the water, he submitted numerous pieces of detailed writing to “The New England Fisherman” with articles that date back to 1981.

After many successful ventures in oil and sea, he found himself ready to retire. He sold his half of the company in 1994. Shortly after, his first grandchild, Melodie was born in 1995, and eventually a grandson, Jon-Marc in 2002. Finding himself bored with retirement, he found pleasure working in the plumbing department of a local Lowe’s. He made many friends and a nickname for himself, like the “sheriff.”

By 2007, he moved to Daytona Beach, Florida to be closer to his sisters, Delores and Patricia. Due to health concerns, he moved back to Connecticut to be near his daughter Diane, son in-law Al Letendre Jr., and grandchildren in May 2016.

He leaves behind many siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family that knew him well. He appreciated being bluntly honest, using sarcasm and wit to get his point across.

Funeral Services will be held Monday August 27, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center Street Manchester, CT.  Family and Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday prior to the service from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM.
