Obituary of Anita (Dobiecka) Milewski

Anita Milewski, beloved wife of the late Stanislaw Milewski, MD, passed away in Manchester, Connecticut on May 9, 2018 at the age of eighty-three.

She was born on January 19, 1935 in Białystok, Poland to her mother Maria Breza and her father Jerzy Dobiecki, a career army officer.  Anita was just four years old when World War II began with German forces invading Poland from the west on September 1, 1939 and Soviet forces from the east on September 17, 1939.  While her father served in the military abroad, Anita and the rest of the family lived in war-torn Poland during the war. She left Poland in October 1947 with her mother and siblings, Teresa and Andrew, to join her father in France and then England where her brother George was born.  She attended schools in Poland and also the Blanche de Castille boarding school in Lille, France, another in Tring, Hertfordshire upon arriving in England in 1951, and lastly Regent Street Polytechnic in London.

On July 11, 1959, Anita married Stan and together they moved from England to the United States in December 1959.  She loved being a wife and mother and raising their three children: Andrew, Teresa, and Mark.  She loved being a mom above all else.  A superb cook, she created home-cooked dinners when the kids were growing up, eaten with the family every night at 5:30pm when Stan got home from work.  She supported Stan in his medical career and they shared a passion in providing support to many Polish causes.  She enjoyed tennis, skiing, reading, and really enjoyed playing bridge.  She loved family vacations skiing in Vermont, camping in Canada, relaxing on the beach in Niantic, and visiting family in Europe.  Anita and Stan were blessed with great friends and neighbors and especially dear were their Polish circle of friends.  Anita was a skilled gardener and plants and flowers thrived inside and outside her home.  A talent with languages, she spoke English with an elegant accent, she taught Polish for many years, and remained fluent in French.  In her prime, she enjoyed walking three miles a day and loved the outdoors.  She was kind, down to earth, funny, caring, and generous.  Everyone who entered her home became like family.

Anita is survived by her son Andrew and his wife Meghan of Coventry; her daughter Teresa of Colorado; her son Mark of Manchester; her granddaughters Hannah and Maya; her brother George Dobiecki and his wife Elizabeth of Crawley, England; her sister-in-law Edith Dobiecki of London, England; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Andrzej & Ewa Milewski of North Carolina; her sister-in-law Teresa Weiner of California; and many beloved cousins, nephews, and nieces, who always kept in close contact from many parts of the world.  Her family was always the most important part of her life.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, May 22^nd from 4 to 6 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street in Manchester.  The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 23^rd at 10 a.m. St. James Church, 896 Main Street in Manchester.  Immediately following mass, an informal reception will be held at Georgina’s restaurant, 275 Boston Turnpike (Rt. 44) in Bolton for friends and family to share stories and celebrate her life.  A private graveside ceremony will occur at a later date at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Britain.
