Aldona Backus

Obituary of Aldona Backus

Aldona Maila Backus, 86, of Manchester, passed on peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Tuesday, June 29, 2004. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York before moving to Connecticut to raise her family. She also spent many childhood years in Lithuania. Aldona retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1983 after 33 years of service. She was an extremely loving mom to all her children, and was affectionately called Nanny by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many other members of a large extended family of friends. She enjoyed relaxing in the garden, traveling, camping, eating out (especially luscious desserts), and the many family and friend times at home and elsewhere. She lived beautifully, she shared generously, she loved unselfishly and she will be terribly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ross of Manchester, her son and daughter-in-law Philip and Barbara Backus of Hamden, and her loving sister, Anna Grigalis of Bayside, New York. She leaves four very special grandchildren, Lisa and Jed Backus, Jenifer Rainville, Michael Backus, a great-granddaughter Sierra Ferrari, and two special nieces, Irene, Diane, and their loving families. She also leaves her very special friend and caretaker, Debbie Myers of East Hartford. She was predeceased by her son William Backus, her daughter Renee Hills, her brother John Maila, and her grandson Kevin Ross. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial gathering will be held for family and close friends. Memorial donations may be sent to The Alzheimers Association, 919 North Michigan Ave, Suite 1100, Chicago, Illinois 60611-1676.
