Obituary of Gerald C. Hardy

Gerald Charles Hardy, 82, of Manchester, CT passed away peacefully at his home on April 25, 2018. Gerry was born on Nov. 13, 1935 in Manchester, NH. He attended Manchester West High School and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1957 with his beloved wife, D. Sue (Fournier) Hardy. He moved to Manchester, CT 55 years ago. Gerry was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1970. Before his retirement in 1982, he was employed as an engineer at Pratt & Whitney.

He had a great love of the outdoors and, in his younger years, was an avid fisherman. After the birth of his children, he and his family became enthusiastic hikers. He was active in the Appalachian Mountain Club serving as Connecticut Chapter Chairman in 1979-80 and Chairman of the AMC’s Major Excursions Committee for many years. Gerry and his wife co-authored “50 Hikes in Connecticut” in 1978.

He loved to travel both in the US and abroad and visited many countries in Europe, Asia, South America and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand).

Gerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue, his daughters, Mary Anne Hardy and her husband Phil Bujalski of North Haven, Patricia Hynes and her husband, George of Branford, his son Charles Hardy and his wife, Julie Neenan of Cottonwood, Arizona, his brother, Paul Hardy of Buzzards Bay, MA and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, David.

There will be no calling hours and burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 10 City Square, Boston, MA 02129 (or online here.)
