Obituary of Stanislaw Milewski MD

Stanislaw A. Milewski, MD, 80, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife Anita, son Andrew and his wife Meghan, daughter Teresa, son Mark, and two cherished granddaughters Hannah and Maya. Also his brother Andrzej and his wife Ewa of North Carolina, his sister Teresa Weiner of California, nieces and nephews, and family in Poland. Stanislaw A. Milewski, MD MA FACS, practiced ophthalmology and specialized in retinal detachment surgery. He was formerly president of Retina Consultants P.C. and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Connecticut. He was born on June 16, 1930 in Bagrowo, Poland to his mother Sabina and father Alfred. On February 10, 1940 Stan was deported with his family to Russia, 185 miles east of the city of Archangel on the White Sea when Stalin deported a million and a half Poles to Siberia for extermination. Half of them perished from forced hard labor, starvation, disease, and cold. He left Russia as a dependent with General Anders' army in 1942 to Iran where the Polish Army was being formed, which later fought in the Italy campaign. In 1943 he joined the Polish Military Cadet School in Barbara, Palestine. In 1947 unwilling to return to a Communist Poland, he and his family moved to England where he completed his secondary education at the Joseph Conrad Preparatory School. In 1956 he graduated from medical school at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland. After graduating he worked in Leicester Royal Infirmary and Hammersmith Hospital, London, England. He married his wife Anita on July 11, 1959 and in December they immigrated to the United States. He did his Internship at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, Residency in Ophthalmology at the Gill Memorial Hospital in Virginia, and Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Milewski was Senior Attending at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He held teaching/advisory status at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. He served as President of the Manchester Memorial Hospital Staff in 1990 and the Manchester Medical Association in 1991. He is Past Chief of Ophthalmology at Manchester Hospital (1974-1989), Corporate of Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), and Member of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Alumni Association. In 2006 he won the ECHN Outstanding Physician Lifetime Achievement Award. With his wife Anita he established the annual Milewski Lecture in Polish Studies at Central Connecticut State University and the Milewski Scholarship Fund at the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York City. He served as Past President of the Polish American Congress of Connecticut, Trustee Emeritus of the Kosciuszko Foundation, Past Vice-President of the Pilsudski Institute, Member of the Polish American Foundation of Connecticut, Member of the Polish Cultural Club of Hartford, and Sponsor of the Committee for the Blind of Poland in New York. He received the Connecticut Honorary Immigrant Day Award from the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut in 2001 and the Medal of Merit given by the S.A. Blejwas Endowed Chair of Polish and Polish American Studies, Central Connecticut State University in 2009. He was presented the Cavalier Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland by the President of Poland in 1996 for his teaching and lectures at many Polish medical universities and for organizing the donation of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of surgical equipment. The Mayor of the Polish city of Bydgoszcz presented him with the Mayor's Medal in 1997 for his specific contributions to the University of Bydgoszcz. Dr. Milewski was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons. His memberships included the Vitreous Society, New England Ophthalmological Society, Schepens International Society, Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Connecticut State Medical Society, and the Hartford County Medical Association. In October 2001 he gained Honorary Membership in the Polish Ophthalmological Society. He presented many scientific papers at international, national, and local ophthalmology meetings and had multiple publications in international and American ophthalmology journals. He co-authored four ophthalmology textbooks, which were translated into several languages and distributed worldwide. He was a philanthropist, loved practicing medicine, and teaching in the U.S. and Poland. He enjoyed family vacations on the lakes in Canada, the mountains in Vermont, and the seashore of Connecticut and Florida. His hobbies included tennis, skiing, bridge, and history. Calling hours will be on Monday, June 13th from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street in Manchester. The memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, June 14th at 10 a.m., St. James Church, 896 Main Street in Manchester. Immediately following mass, a reception will be held at Georgina's Restaurant, 275 Boston Turnpike (Rt. 44) in Bolton. A private graveside ceremony will occur at a later date at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Britain.
