Obituary of Anna S. Butterfield
Anna (Sheils) Butterfield, 71, of Manchester, CT, loving wife of the late Robert K. Butterfield, MD, passed away on December 6, 2012 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. She was born in Houlton, Maine, the daughter of the late Alphonsus and Agnes (McKinnon) Sheils. Anna graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and earned her R.N. from Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME. She worked at Manchester Memorial Hospital as a cardiac nurse and later earned her bachelor and master degrees from Central Connecticut State University. She taught at the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing. She loved the nursing profession and was a proponent of putting her patients' care first in all circumstances. She opened a family counseling service in Bolton. She was a faithful communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church. Anna played classical piano and always enjoyed various types of music and dancing. She and Bob especially liked to travel to and camp in various parts of the country. She was predeceased by her brother John T. Sheils. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Sheils, brothers Joseph A. Sheils and wife Deanna, and Peter J. Sheils and wife Florence. She shared a special relationship with her stepdaughter, Candace Butterfield, of New York. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews: Theresa M. Sheils of Washington, D.C., Thomas P. Sheils and wife Alissa and their two children Emma and Dillon of Holliston, MA, Kathleen M. Haney and husband Robert and their two children Sawyer and Grace of Pomfret, Elizabeth A. Sheils of East Hartford, and Rebecca M. Sheils and fiancée Deborah Heimel of West Newton, MA. She also leaves a special long-time family friend Sue West of South Windsor, many cousins and several stepchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. James Roman Catholic Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester, CT at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 10. Family and friends may call Sunday, December 9 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, CT. In lieu of flowers, and because Anna always loved children, memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, 282 Washington St. Hartford, CT 06102.
