Obituary of Edmund J. Mickiewicz

Edmund J. Mickiewicz, 86, of East Hartford, beloved husband of 65 years to Frances (Dorbuck) Mickiewicz died Saturday (November 24, 2012) at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Scranton, PA he was the son of John F. and Beatrice Mickiewicz. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. Edmund graduated (Magna Cum Laude) with a BA in Accounting from the University of Hartford. During his college years, he played in several area bands. He began his professional career with Meridith & Grew as the property manager of Constitution Plaza in Hartford. He then worked at the Travelers before his employment began with the State Department of Transportation. He served as both a Deputy Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer. In 1977 he was appointed as the first Commissioner of Administrative Services by then Governor Ella T. Grasso. He loved his work at the DOT and eventually returned and retired as its Chief Administrative Officer. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Mary Beth Miller and her husband Donald of Marlborough, Janice Seibert of Santa Barbara, CA, Jane Guilmette of Manchester, and Mark Mickiewicz and his wife Cheryl of Ellington; his grandchildren Jennifer and her husband Jayson, Jonathan, Ethan and his wife Sara, Eric, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Shannon, Aaron, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Christopher and Kelly; and his great-grandchildren Landon, Jaeden and Caleb. He is also survived by his sister Genevieve Mickiewicz of East Hartford and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughters, Nancy Pine and Susan Hartfield, and his granddaughter Chelsea. Edmund was a devout Catholic who was also the true patriarch of his family which relied on his wisdom, guide, love and care to support us all. He was a true gentleman who will be deeply missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a loyal follower of UConn basketball, the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and loved his many trips to the casinos with Frances. Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff of St. Francis for providing him with wonderful care and to especially acknowledge Drs. Robert Cushman, Samantha Matney and Robin Gold for their extraordinary compassion. Funeral service will be held on Friday (November 30th) at 10 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Christopher Church, 538 Brewer Street East Hartford, followed by burial in Silver Lane Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Haitian Health Foundation, 97 Sherman Street Norwich, CT 06360.
