Obituary of Stanley Swetz

On December 14, 2017 Stanley Swetz, lifetime resident of Manchester, CT passed into eternity. He was born on the farm there to hardworking Ukrainian immigrants Ostap and Katherine Gruntkowski Swetz on Dec. 7, 1929, the youngest of 6 children. As a young man he peddled milk with his father from their own dairy cows. He graduated from Manchester High School and served in the military, serving in the Air Force. After military service, he returned to the farm and planted his own 30 acre apple orchard and sold his apples locally at the family stand on Wetherell St. He also kept bees for twenty years and he sold the honey and made beeswax candles for the churches. Stanley also worked at Alden Spinning Mills. He married Frances Sikernitsky in 1970 and raised three children, Stanley, Robin and Kim. In the 1970's he went to work for AMF Cuno of Talcottville, CT as a maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1994. For the last 23 years he worked on projects on his farm, always staying busy mowing the lawn on his property. Stanley is survived by his children; Stanley Swetz of Manchester, Robin Cotter Swetz and her husband Matthew Cotter of Wallingford, and Kim Tzovarras and her husband Mark of Naugatuck; as well as his grandchildren John and James Cotter. He is also survived by Kathy Sheridan, his partner of 31 years, of Manchester and her children Charles Sheridan and Theresa Brooke and her husband Damian, and Kathy's grandchildren Caitlin Buschman, Kyle Brooke and Christopher Brooke and her great grandchildren Jacob and Ryan. Besides his wife, Frances, Stanley was predeceased by his siblings; brothers John Swetz, Stanislaw Swetz, and Michael Swetz; and his sisters Mary Swetz and Ann Kutcher. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center Street, Manchester, on Tuesday December 19th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be private.
