Obituary of Edna M. Penny

Edna Mullen Penny passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2017 in western Pennsylvania, where she had spent the last nine years under the watchful care of her daughter, Jane. The daughter of immigrants from Northern Ireland, the late William F. Mullen, Sr. and Sarah (Strain) Mullen, she was born on July 17, 1925 in Manchester and graduated in the Manchester High School Class of 1943. In 1947, she married Alexander C. Penny, II, who predeceased her. A working mother, she was employed in her early career as a secretary with several different divisions of United Aircraft. She later worked for many years as executive secretary for Helen Loy, the University of Hartford's Vice President for Legislative Affairs, and following her1987 retirement, filling in seasonally in the university president's office. In 1994, she relocated with her husband to their second home in Punta Gorda, Florida, where she volunteered for the Charlotte Regional Medical Hospital, and also in the office of Burnt Store Presbyterian Church. Edna was very sociable, and made many friends throughout her husband's active involvement with the Masons and Shriners, and with her own volunteerism. She is survived by her three children, sons Stephen T. Penny of Manchester and his partner Kathleen McQueeney, and Clark A. Penny of Haddam, and daughter Jane C. Lambrecht of New Alexandria, PA and her husband Jim; and by her brother, William F. Mullen JR. of Manchester and his wife Norma. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Thursday, December 14 at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
