John served his country in the Armed forces. He was stationed in Fort Story, Virginia, where he met his soul mate, wife, and best friend, Shirley (Fox) who is from Ohio.

He was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox and Uconn Huskies. He loved attending his grandchildren's many sporting events. After he retired, he enjoyed traveling and playing golf throughout the country with his wife, Shirley.
