Obituary of Helen W. Corcoran

A great love story has been renewed as Helen Corcoran was called home to her Heavenly Father on August 23, 2017 to join her husband William. She passed away in her home following her 30-year battle with dementia. Helen was born in Westfield, MA on June 12, 1923, the daughter of immigrants from Poland. She was one of six sisters who grew up on the family farm on Montgomery Road where she developed an outstanding work ethic and learned the importance of personal commitment, both of which were central to her character and served her well for her entire life. After graduating from Westfield High School in 1941, she worked at the Third National Bank of Hamden County and was a highly regarded employee. Helen and William were married on Labor Day in 1949. Their marriage was true love; they lived for each other. Early on, Helen took care of William. As Helen's dementia progressed, William took care of all of Helen's needs. Their love lasted for 65 years until William's passing in 2014. Helen excelled at many things. She was organized, innovative, practical, a role model, teacher, and friend. She shared kindness and compassion with everyone. Helen always had the gift of saying the right words at the right time to comfort others. As Helen's dementia progressed her ability to speak disappeared, but she was still able to convey love and compassion through the twinkle in her eyes, her smile, and gentle loving touch. Helen was a talented seamstress, making curtains, upholstering furniture, as well as clothing. She crocheted dozens of afghans, making special ones for family and friends. She was a domestic genius, and worked with a smile. She was also a master at the lost art of ironing. Her family marveled at how she could make anything flat. Helen kept the family organized on a daily basis and could have the camper packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. She was an avid Whalers fan. Helen and William spent many nights at the Civic Center cheering on the Whalers! Helen will be dearly missed by her children Dan Corcoran and his wife Marie of Palm Bay, FL; Philip Corcoran of Palm Bay, FL; Kathie Corcoran of East Hartford, CT; and Elaine Corcoran of East Hartford, CT, and also her grandchildren James Corcoran and his wife Krista of Delanson, NY; Jennifer Corcoran of Enfield, CT; Stacy Corcoran of Apex, NC; and Michael Corcoran and his friend Danielle Harris of Vernon, CT; and her sister Isabelle Tenero of Hopkinton, MA and brother-in-law John Rocha of Windsor, CT. Helen was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Janet Corcoran of Palm Bay, FL in 2015. Helen was also predeceased by four of her sisters (Genevieve, Nellie, Wanda, and Stella) and two brothers-in-law (Anthony and Henry). Special thanks to nurse Andie and all the wonderful nurses and staff from Hartford HealthCare at Home-Hospice Care for guiding Helen and her daughters through this journey. Family and friends are invited to visit with Helen's family at Tierney Funeral Home, 291 West Center Street, Manchester, CT on Sunday, August 27 from 4-7 PM.
