Obituary of Michael W. Pierro

Michael W. Pierro 97 yrs of Manchester, beloved husband of Jeannette (St Onge) Pierro passed away peacefully on August 4, 2017 with his family by his side. Michael was born on March 13, 1920 in Manchester CT to Guerino and Antoinette (Mastropietro) Pierro. Besides his loving wife of 70 years, he leaves behind three adoring children, Janice, David and Michael, daughter in laws Daphne, Linda and Sara and six grandchildren, Kelsey, Brittany, Olivia, Susan, Eric and Jonathan and one great grandchild Laurel Anne. He was predeceased by his brother Rudolph, his son Warren and his grandson Warren Armond. He is survived by his sister Rose Pierro. He also leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Michael was a life long resident of Manchester and was very active in sports his whole life. In High School he was the captain of the tennis team, played basketball and competed on the High school rifle team. He was also the editor of the High school World. Following his graduation, Michael received a degree from Howell Cheney Technical School while taking evening courses. He competed and won the Town tournament in Table Tennis. He was a World War II veteran serving three and one half years in the US Air Force with the rank of Sergeant. He traveled to Florida, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, and California for his training before being shipped to New Guinea, Australia and then settling in the Philippines where he served most of his time working as a mechanic on the US Air Force planes. During that time he graduated from the National School of Aeronautics. Following his discharge he attended the New England Technical Institute and was employed by Hamilton Standard for 39 years in manufacturing quality control and process engineering. He loved watching the UCONN men's and women's basketball, Celtics, Golf, Tennis and the Red Sox. Michael enjoyed camping with his family. While working at Hamilton Standard he met others who shared his interest in camping. It became a tradition to go camping with multiple families on Holiday weekends. The group was named the Holiday Ramblers and they all became an extended family. Michael also looked forward to planning the annual vacations during the 2 week Hamilton Standard shut down in August. Each year Michael would pack up the family and travel camping throughout the U.S. Other passions were golfing, bowling and cabinetmaking. He loved to take photos so much he took a class at MCC and over the years he produced thousands of slides of his family and family vacations. Michael taught himself to make various furniture pieces which reside in his and his children's homes. Michael's greatest joy and what he was most proud of was his family. Michael looked forward to spending time with them. The family will miss him, his dry sense of humor and all the joy he gave. Thank you to all the Care Takers from A Helping Hand, Meg, Towanda, Ellen and Jenny. Thank you also to the Visiting Nurse Hospice Care nurses. We couldn't have done this without all of you. Funeral service will be held on Monday, August 7th at 9:15 from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 at St.James Church, Manchester with burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home.on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00. In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.
