Obituary of Diana P. Behlke

Diana "Di" (Powers, Tirabassi) Behlke, 79, of Naples, Florida and Manchester, Connecticut, wife for nearly fifty years of Roy F. Behlke died on Tuesday July 4, 2017 surrounded by family, after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut and was raised in West Hartford the daughter of William F. and Lerlene Gray Powers. She graduated from Hall High School and went on to Colby College where she met her first husband Philip Tirabassi. Their marriage ended with his tragic death after only one year. After graduating from Colby in 1959, she joined her father and siblings in the family business at William F Powers Clothiers in West Hartford Center where she managed the Diana Lee clothing shop. She became a member of the Catholics Graduates Club where she met her husband Roy participating in many activities together including producing musicals to raise scholarships for the Hartford Archdiocese Catholic High Schools. They were married in 1968 and settled in Manchester to raise their two children, Mary Kate and Chris. Di was active in the Highland Park School PTA serving as president and the Glenbrook Swim and Tennis Club where she and her family spend many enjoyable summers. As the children grew older Di continued her retail career at the Lucy Baltzell Shop in West Hartford Center working side by side with her beloved sister Nancy. Di's lifelong interest in gardening led to active involvement with the Manchester Garden Club, the Perennial Planters, and their community landscape committee; her commitment and enjoyment of gardening clearly shown through with the many times their Manchester home was featured in local and national garden tours. Another important part of Di and Roy's life together was their time spend in Kennebunk Beach, Maine at the Powers family cottage with her parents, her sister and brother and eventually her own family. Celebrating the 4th of July, antiquing and family reunions with the Muskie's were great traditions. After retiring, Di and Roy became snowbirds buying a condo in Naples, Florida enjoying golf, cards, trivia, and going to the FGCU basketball games and spending quality time with their many snowbird friends. Diana will be remembered for her colorful gardens, her chockchis and her great dedication to her grandchildren. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. In addition to her beloved husband Roy, she is survived by her dear sister Nancy Tanner and her husband Craig of Farmington, CT and her brother William F. Powers and his wife Rosemary of West Granby, CT. She is also survived by her daughter Mary Kate Donais and her husband Craig of Manchester, NH and her son Chris Behlke and his wife Kathy of Colchester, CT, and her four grandchildren Jakob Behlke, Garrett Donais, Hanna Behlke and Aidan Donais.
