Obituary of Alan John MacMillan

Alan John MacMillan, 70, of Manchester, the beloved husband of 41 years to Elissa J. MacMillan, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Thomaston, Maine, the son of the late Garfield J. and Cecelia (Maxcy) MacMillan, he grew up in Maine before moving to East Hartford and lived in Manchester for 40 years. Alan graduated from East Hartford High School in 1964, received his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in 1972 and a Masters of Arts in Economics from the University of Hartford in 1977. He also received a Masters of Arts in Economic Research from Trinity College in 1977. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He worked in the Plant Engineering Dept. at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, retiring as a Cost Analyst after 43 years of service. Alan enjoyed traveling abroad, listening to all types of music, playing chess, watching sci-fi movies, and was an avid reader. He loved working on muscle cars and was a sports and history buff who could school anyone at Jeopardy along with his wife. He will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit and dry sense of humor and was a simple man with a kind soul and spirit who loved his family deeply. In addition to his wife Elissa, he is survived by his sons Bradley MacMillan and Cody MacMillan of Manchester, his daughter Heather Corcoran and her husband Garrett, his granddaughter Ellie, and his sisters Mrs. Mona Willis and her husband John of Woonsocket, RI, and Mrs. Alma "Sherry" Steele and her husband James of Owls Head, ME, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers James MacMillan, Miles "Buddy" MacMillan and Gary MacMillan,and his beloved grand doggie Bella. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and caregivers from Hartford Healthcare at Home, especially Tammy, Marlene, Felicia, Andie and Nicole. They would also like to thank the staff at the John DeQuattro Cancer Center, especially Roberta and Stephanie, and a big thank you to Mark for your warmth and attentiveness. Thanks also to Drs. McLauglin, Staley and Leopold and to Reanne Burke for always being there for Alan and Elissa. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester on Monday May 29th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 30th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
