Obituary of Catherine T. Wicks

Catherine T. (Kitty) Wicks passed away April 30, 2017, at the Brookdale Senior Living Residences in South Windsor, at the age of 96. Born in New Haven, on June 13, 1920, Kitty was the daughter of Irish immigrants Henry and Margaret (Kelleher) Thornton and the beloved wife for 48 years of the late Ruel Wicks. Kitty was a long-time resident of Manchester and a long-time parishioner at St. James Catholic Church. She worked for many years at House & Hale Department Store and retired from Connecticut Bank & Trust. She volunteered for many organizations in town, including the Ladies of St. James, the Lutz Museum, the Town of Manchester Friendly Visitors Program, Cub Scout Troop 143 and Boy Scout Troop 47, where her husband Ruel was a leader for 35 years. Most of all, Kitty was a Girl Scout. Over the course of more than 50 years, she influenced the lives of hundreds of girls by serving as a Brownie leader, Junior leader, service unit manager, Catholic committee member, coordinator of Girl Scout Sunday breakfasts, camp counselor and certified camper who provided training for other leaders. Kitty believed in the values of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low and, on occasion, portrayed her at scouting events. She took pride in the Girl Scout uniform, as well as the Girl Scout promise and law. She believed in the empowerment of girls and helped to instill in them the importance of being good citizens by being honest, responsible and helpful members of the community. She was the mother of a First Class girl scout and the mother/grandmother of seven Eagle Scouts. She is survived by her four children and spouses; Diane Wicks and husband Thomas Ruby of South Windsor, James Wicks and wife Joyce of Coventry, David Wicks and wife Kathi of Coventry and Paul Wicks and wife Elizabeth of South Windsor. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren; Dan & Eric Ruby, Andrew, Tim and Brian Wicks, Lindsay (Wicks) and her husband Adam Holland, Carrie Wicks and Michael & Sarah Wicks. And she is survived by nieces April Holeva of Milford, CT, Cindy Russell of Cheshire, CT, Tracy Beattie of Gardner, MA and many other close family members. She was predeceased by her sister Rita Dickerson and her brother James Thornton. Nothing was more important to Kitty than family. She was immensely proud of her children, her grandchildren and her Irish heritage. Calling hours are Wednesday May 3, 2017 from 4-8 PM at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester, CT.
