Obituary of Mel A. McCann

Mel A. McCann, 74, of Glastonbury, CT, passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2017. Mel was born in Longford, Ireland and lived many years in London, United Kingdom. He studied history at Oxford University and advanced art at the University of London and Central Saint Martin's, specializing in painting and sketching. Mel moved to Connecticut in 1976 and married Rebecca Shook McCann in 1980. Mel is survived by their three beloved daughters- Jennifer, Ashley, and Melissa McCann of Connecticut- as well as three children in the United Kingdom-Stephen Dacey, Karen Warr, and Tara Bateson and several grandchildren. Mel also leaves behind brothers James McCann, Oliver McCann and his wife Susan, and sister Catherine Downey and her husband John of the United Kingdom, brother Peter McCann of Manchester, CT, and Kevin McCann and his wife Claudia of North Carolina, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents James and Jane McCann and his brother Michael McCann. Those who knew Mel remember him as a gifted lifelong artist, avid fisherman, enthusiastic historian who loved and supported the Smithsonian Institution, dedicated tennis fan, gentle friend and proud father. Mel will be remembered at the home of his daughters on Thursday evening, February 23, 2017, beginning at 4:00 pm: 101 Daryl Drive, Vernon, CT 06066. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the St. Joseph's Indian School or the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
