Obituary of Joseph R. Smith

Joseph R. Smith, 85, of Manchester, the husband of the late Nancy (Lynch) Smith died Tuesday, November 08, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph R. and Lillie (Allen) Smith, he had lived in Manchester for most of his life. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Hamilton Standard after many years of service, where he was instrumental in work on the Apollo Space Program in the late 1960's, particularly on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and the environmental control systems for use in the space suits. He received many awards, especially the "Silver Snoopy Award" for the Shuttle EMU Program. Following his retirement, he worked as a School Crossing Guard in Manchester for many years. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen Mora and her husband Wayne of Willington, Kelley Donachie and her husband Brian of Fairport, NY and Kerry Moore and her husband Donald of Ellington; his grandchildren Jason Mora and wife Courtney, Jessica Wright and husband Philip, James Mora and fiancée Kayla Pollock, Kevin Donachie, Amie Donachie, Scott Donachie, Michael Moore and Sara Moore; and his great-granddaughter Kinley Mora. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Poulin and her husband Charles of Blufton, SC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family.
