Obituary of Carleton Briggs

Briggs, Carlton Donald, Jr., 88, of Buzzards Bay, MA, passed away October 26, 2016. Born March 29, 1928 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of the late Carlton Donald, Sr. and Gladys Briggs, Don was a graduate of Fairfield Prep, Villanova University and a U.S. Army veteran. In 1953 he married Mary Frances Barton and moved to West Hartford to work at Pratt and Whitney. He later joined the brokerage firm of Shearson Hamill and moved to Manchester, where he would he would live for the next 60 years. After a successful career as a stock broker, Don made made his big career change and opened "The Great Ice Cream Store" in Unionville. He later relocated the store to Manchester. In the mid-1980's, Don retired and traveled extensively with Mary Fran. Don Briggs can best be described as a family man, a gentleman and a diehard Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan. His great wit, kind nature and warm smile will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Fran; daughters Patti Haney of Falmouth, MA and Christine Fiske (Warren) of Richmond, VA; sons Jeffrey (Barbara) of Palm Harbor, FL, and Jim (Evelyn) of North Bergen, NJ; grandsons Will and Bailey Briggs, Peter and Michael (Meaghan) Haney; granddaughters Emily and Katie Fiske, great grandson Donavan Haney and daughter-in-law AlisonWholey-Briggs. Don was predeceased by his son, Carlton Donald Briggs, III and his sister, Nancy Seiler. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Church, where Don and Mary Fran were parishioners for over 50 years, located at 896 Main Street, Manchester, CT. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of the arrangements.
