Obituary of William H. Marceau

William H. (Bill) Marceau, of Ft. Pierce, FL, beloved husband of Bridget (Lynn) Marceau passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016. Born in Lackawanna, NY he was the son of Florence Carter Marceau. He is survived by his wife and three sons, William of Coventry, CT, Peter Colin of Dumfries, VA and Kevin of El Sobrante, CA. He also is survived by his Brother-in-law William B. Lynn of Manchester, CT, six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He lived in Manchester until his retirement in 1983 when he and Bridget began wintering in Florida and returning to Connecticut each summer to keep in touch with friends and family from their residence in Voluntown, CT. Bill joined the Manchester State Guard at the age of 16 and the U.S. Navy when reaching 17 years of age. He served on two destroyers during WWII, the USS Blakeley and the USS O'Hare. After the war Bill joined the National Guard and was federalized in 1950 during the Korean War. He completed 24 years of service with the Guard, serving in the 169th Infantry, 43rd Infantry Division, before retiring as a Captain. Bill and Bridget were married on October 4, 1947 and spent more than 68 happy years together. He joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1958 where he worked at the Manchester and Buckland Post Offices for many years. He completed his service at the Rocky Hill Post Office retiring as an Assistant Supervisor in 1983. Bill was a proud member of the St. Patrick's Pipe Band of Glastonbury, Connecticut. He was a member of the band for more than 50 years, Pipe Major of the Band for 27 years and taught many of the Band's members to play the pipes. As a life member of the Irish American Home in Glastonbury he was instrumental in setting up the association between the club and the band and arranging practices in the upstairs hall each Monday night which continues to this day. He was a life member of the American Legion Post in Port St. Lucie FL, and the VFW post 2046 in Manchester, CT and a member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree Knight. Bill was also a member of the Manchester Lodge #1893 B.P.O. Elks for over 50 years, and American Legion Post 102 before transferring those memberships to Florida. The loves of his life were his wife, Bridget, his three sons, and the bagpipes. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 7th at 10:30 a.m. from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial Celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, 29 Adams Street Manchester, CT followed by burial at East Cemetery in Manchester, CT. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
