Angella Lareau

Obituary of Angella Lareau

Angella Maltilda Lareau (Bonin) passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2009. Born May 7, 1915 in St-Jean-de-Matha, Canada, Angella moved to the United States as a young teenager. She lived in the Hartford area for most of life. Angella was married to Florent Rene Lareau on May 20, 1933 and they lived happily together for 42 years until his death in 1975. Angella and Rene raised 4 wonderful children and she will be sorely missed by those she left behind. Her oldest son Andre passed away in 1982. Her remaining children and spouses include Robert and wife Maxine of Bristol, Michael and wife Fran of Columbia, and Roland and wife Linda of Canton. There are also the grandchildren that will miss her dearly. They include Andre's children, Andrea Hendry and Valerie, Robert's children, Janice and Susan, Michael's children Michelle Delisle of Cromwell and Mark of Worcester, MA, along with Roland's children, Alaina and Nicole. After several years of being alone, Angella fell in love again and married her long time friend and brother-in-law, Leo Lareau of Manchester, on November 3, 1978. Leo had been married to Florence Lareau (Cote) for many years before her death and also had raised 4 children. Needless to say, there was now a large combined family of brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, children, grand children and great grandchildren and some of the family gatherings were beyond what could be contained under one roof. We all chuckled about that when we meet for family picnics and weddings. Angella was a very hard working woman who had endless energy. She worked at various jobs throughout her life including being a housekeeper along with her sister when they first moved to the US. She worked at Lorraine Pastry Shop in West Harford Center as a young lady and later met Rene and fell in love. She was the main child care provider while her husband worked at Pratt & Whitney and Fenn Manufacturing. They also owned a small grocery store on Lawrence Street in Hartford and the family lived right up the road from the store during that time period. From there the family moved to "the farm" in East Windsor where she proceeded to tear down walls, rip up floors, paint and wallpaper to fix up the house. She tended to the 500 chickens in the coop, and when Sunday dinner rolled around, there wasn't a fresher bird to be had. After the farm was sold, they moved to Park Road in West Hartford and Angella continued to raise the boys. As they got a little older and were all in school, again she went back to work to help provide for the family. She worked for several years in the meat department at Brown Thompson's on Main Street in Hartford, but then settled into a long career at Champlain Drug on Park Street. She worked there for 18 years before retiring, running both the Post Office and the main front counter. She was loved by all of her customers and the children who lived in the neighborhood. You would always hear someone say "Hey Angie, how are you doing today" when they entered the store. She really loved the little kids who would come in after school to buy candy, and they all loved her too. After retiring, Angella and Rene were the grandparents that all children hope for. They would visit and baby sit and spoil the grand kids as much as they could. That continued with Angella and Leo after they were married as more and more grand children and great grandchildren filled the scene. She had a wonderful life. The family would like to thank the staff at Brittany Farms nursing home in New Britian for all of their kind help for these last several months. These last 2 years were a struggle for her from a physical standpoint as Arthritis spread throughout her body. She is in a better place now and is reunited with both Rene and Leo up in the stars. Calling hours will be at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home at 219 West Center St., Manchester, CT, on Wednesday February 4 from 10-11 AM, followed by a benediction service at the funeral home at 11 am. Burial will follow at Mount St. Benedict's Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT. For online condolences please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com.
