Obituary of Norman C. Comollo

Norman C. Comollo, of Manchester, the husband of Mary (Sapienza) Comollo whom would have celebrated their 58th anniversary on September 10, 2007 died Thursday (August 2, 2007) at Harford Hospital. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter Peri Comollo and son Richard Comollo; his special pride and joy, his grandson, Andrew Comollo; and his brother Robert J. Comollo and his wife Diane. Born in Manchester he was the son of late Adele (Martina) and Italo Comollo who were Italian immigrants from the Piedmont Region of Northern Italy. He attended local schools and was a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII with the Second Marine Division during the occupation of Japan. He had a diversified career in industry and electrical contracting. Prior to his retirement he was an officer and principal of Eastern Scientific Associates Environmental Lab which was sold in 1988 to United Water Resources. He retired in that year. He was a long time Democrat and served on the Democratic Town Committee and several appointed positions. He was a lifetime admirer of President Harry S. Truman whom he voted for in his first presidential election. In 1962 he was appointed as a Commissioner of the State Board of Fisheries & Game. He was reappointed in 1967 serving until the agency was integrated in the Department of Environmental Protection. He served as Chairman of the Board during the construction of the Quinebaug Valley Fish Hatchery. He was also a member of the original Clean Water Task Force in 1966. An avid upland bird and waterfowl hunter he used Labrador Retrievers when they were relatively uncommon. His first dog was purchased in Ohio from a duck hunting guide on Lake Erie in 1952. He served on the Hartford National Bank-Manchester Advisory Board for 30 years until its merger with Fleet Bancorp. He was also a life member of Andover Sportsman's Club and BPOE Elks 1833. For many years he was a member of the Hartford Gun Club. On behalf of Norman the family wishes to especially acknowledge Dr. Michael Underwood, Dr. Hazar Dahhan and Dr. Robert D. Siegel for their care and compassion which helped him to reach his goal of his 80th birthday. Funeral service will be held on Monday August 6th at 10:15 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Bridget Church Main St. Manchester followed by burial in St. James Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-6 pm. Donations may be made in his memory to John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center 73-A Haynes Street Manchester, CT 06040.
