In 1959, at five years old, I had open heart surgery at Hartford Hospital. I never knew the doctor, but thought, for some unknown reason, his last name started with a D. I will turn 70 soon and saw a cardiologist. She asked about my surgery and was in awe and said, “Hartford Hospital really? He must have been a highly skilled surgeon. You’re very lucky.” I came home and did research and came across Dr. Donovan’s obituary. It feels good to pay silent tribute to this medical pioneer.

I am so sorry about the passing of such a wonderful man. If it had not been for him; I would not have had the pleasure of growing up with my mother. You see she is Ruth Jensen the first open heart surgery for Hartford Hospital. She passed away on September 15, 2001 at age 79. God has blessed him with the touch of healing and helping. My mother never forgot the gift he gave her. Thank you, Maureen Jensen Niemier.

Aunt Harriet and family. My deepest condolences at the loss of your beloved husband/father/friend. His humility hid so many of his contributions to cardiac medicine. He loved music and singing especially when he was joined by all his children. I will always think of him fondly whenever I hear "Danny Boy." Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am privileged to have known Dr. Donovan during my training at Hartford Hospital and then, on occasion, at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was an exemplary role model for a young physician combining the highest qualities of caring, gentleness and kindness with professional excellence. He will be missed but remembered fondly.

Dear Friends, Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers on the death of a very fine man! I knew Tom from my years working at Hartford Hospital and working at St. Bart's. He was a man who loved God, his family and medicine. He had a wonderful sense of humor. His story about Archbishop O'Brien with cigars and oxygen was a classic. The Archbishop's response: "Life is sacred, not absolute!" has been recounted to many. I will hold all of you in prayer, especially on Saturday! God Bless! Father Rohan

Dear Donovan Family: Please accept my deepest sympathy on losing Dr. Donovan after a live well-lived. I did not know Dr. Donovan personally, but as Director of Cardiology at Hartford Hospital, I had certainly heard about his pioneering exploits from the older cardiologists. I actually did not know the breath of his accomplishments until I read the obituary. I hope that you have many wonderful memories to warm your hearts in the days ahead. Also, please accept my gratitude for your generous gift to cardiovascular research here at Hartford Hospital. Sincerely, Paul D. Thompson, MD
