Obituary of Pauline Saunders

Pauline Pauline "Polly" Saunders of 80 Frances Drive, Manchester died on March 22, 2011. Polly met David Ashley Saunders in September, 1950, and they married in November, 1950. They were both music lovers. David died on February 23, 2007. Polly was the daughter of Matthias and Agnes Wertsching, both of whom died before she reached the age of twenty. She was predeceased by her brother, John Wertsching, who died recently. Polly and David had four children who were an endless source of pride and joy to them: Karen Saunders of Manchester who is married to David Cass; Ashley Saunders of Waterford, who is married to Maureen Loughrey; Dr. Christopher Saunders of Arlington, Ohio, who is married to Amy Saunders; and Robert Saunders of Columbus, Ohio, who is married to Elizabeth Curran. Christopher has two children, Kyle David and Eileen. Polly earned a bachelor's degree with a double major in Latin and English from St. Joseph College. She went on to earn a master's degree in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. She took courses in sculpture and painting at the Hartford Art School. She later earned a master's degree in library science and media technology, and enjoyed a long career as a librarian and media specialist at East Hartford High School. As a child she spent many happy hours in the Hartford Public Library, and, at about the age of ten, decided to read all the books in the library starting with "Fiction A." She also loved visiting the Watkinson Library, housed in the upper story of the library, where the librarian showed her all sorts of antique books and curiosities. At some point, she was asked to work in the art and music department of the library, where she spent many happy days. She sang with the Hartford Symphony Chorale for one season, and, upon moving to Manchester, sang with the Manchester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale for many years. Polly was an avid tennis player, and could be seen at the Manchester Racquet Club every week, and usually at Elizabeth Park every Sunday. She also enjoyed skiing and hiking. Perhaps one of her most dedicated efforts was volunteering at the shelter for the homeless in Manchester. She saw it come into being, and worked many hours helping out at the shelter. It was a source of great disappointment that she was unable to continue doing so at retirement because of increasingly poor vision. She never lost her sense of awe at the beauty of the world. This, combined with her passion for art and music, defined her being. A memorial service, to celebrate Pauline's life, will be held on Saturday (March 26) at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester. Memorial donations may be made to either the CT Humane Society, Defenders of Wildlife or the St. Mary's Episcopal Church Book of Remembrance. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of arrangements.
