Obituary of Jon Hawthorne
Jon C. Hawthorne, Sr., 70, of Manchester, the husband of Jeannette (Pease) Hawthorne died Wednesday (March 9, 2011). Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Carroll R. and Gertrude (Conklin) Hawthorne. Jon was a retired Manchester Police Officer having served his community for 28 ½ years. He was a very active member of the Manchester Lodge of Elks #1893, was a member of Friendship Tuscan Lodge #145, was active in scouting, and had coached both midget football and little league in Manchester. With the Manchester and Connecticut Elks Jon held many positions including, but not limited to, Past District Deputy, Past Exalted Ruler, Past Elk of the Year, and many other Lodge offices. He always said, "The best thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said". His favorite times were spent in the company of his wife, children and grandchildren. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Jon C. Hawthorne, Jr. of Manchester, Michelle Hawthorne Darrell and her husband George H. Darrell, Jr. of Manchester, and his grandchildren Benjamin C. Hawthorne, Katherine E. Hawthorne, Christina R. Hobbins and her husband Nathan, and George C. Darrell. He is also survived by his sister Margo Hawthorne Ensling and her husband Robert of East Hartford, his brother William C. Turney of Willington, his cousins Jack Conklin and Carol Jean, and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and godchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Paul Hawthorne. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday (March 15th) at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Church 41 Park St. Manchester followed by burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester on Monday from 2-4 and 6-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Manchester Lodge of Elks 30 Bissell St. Manchester, CT 06040 to benefit special lodge programs that Jon was very involved with.
