Obituary of Helen Malo

Helen Ann Malo, beloved wife of the late Aurelio Antonio Malo, died January 30, 2011. She passed peacefully into the arms of God, surrounded by her family and wrapped in their love. Helen was born June 29, 1924 in Avoca ,Pennsylvania to Polish immigrants , the late Michael and Catherine Byk Haddock. Their tenth child and fourth daughter, she was born on the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul and attended the Church of Saints Peter and Paul until she moved to Manchester Connecticut in 1956.. She was a graduate of Avoca High School in l942. She married Leo on January 25, 1947. She was a devoted wife to him for 57 years, nursing him through a long difficult illness at the end of his life. She was a member of St. Bridget Church. Helen was a talented seamstress, working in the garment industry in Pennsylvania. After her move to Connecticut she worked for K-Klar Toys and, later, Pillowtex.. She especially loved her job as manager for many years of The Parkade Bakery. Helen was the mother of three daughters, Linda, Mary and Susan, but she was also mother to the children in her neighborhood. Mrs. Malo had an open door and an open heart to these children, her daughters' friends, and many nieces and nephews. She was never as happy as when her little house was filled with family and friends. Her generous nature continued all her life. She recently received an award from Hartford Hospital for volunteer service. Many a newborn left the hospital wearing a baby hat crocheted by Helen. A wonderful cook and baker, Helen treated her loved ones to delicious Polish foods. Her pierogies and stuffed cabbage were legendary. She enjoyed sharing her food with family and friends. When they praised her talents they often heard, "What's the big deal?" Helen was an avid sports fan. She cheered for the New York Yankees and had season tickets to the UConn Women's Basketball Games. In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her infant daughter, Mary, her sisters Jospehine Haddock Casey, Ann Haddock Panza, Sophie Haddock, and her brothers Edward, Theodore, Stanley, John, and George. She is survived by her daughter Linda Roy and son- in -law Denis, her daughter Susan Malo, her grandsons Todd Ingersoll and wife Tami, Lucas Roy and wife Emily, granddaughter Sarah Burke and husband Michael, great grandchildren Catherine, Daniel and Jonathan Ingersoll , Shannon, Helena and Caitlyn Burke, brother Michael Haddock, sisters Mary Yevics and Catherine Tyson and many nieces and nephews. Helen continued to love her former son- in- law Kenneth Schlegel. She was looking forward to meeting a new great grandchild in August. She was blessed with the friendship and assistance of a special friend in Bruce Peck this past year. She leaves behind her sweet little dog, Patch. The family would like to thank her medical team of Drs. Kuru, Benson, Russomano, Gorusu, the nursing staff of Center 10 at Hartford Hospital, the medical ICU team , two special nurses Jean and Harim who cared for her as if she were their own mother and especially Dr. Asad Rizvi ,whose expertise, advocacy and dedication was delivered with such kindness and compassion . A Tribute gift in Helen's memory may be made to the Henry Low Heart Center, Hartford Hospital Development Fund, 80 Seymour Street, P.O. box 5073, Hartford, CT 06102. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday (February 4th) at 10 am at St. Bridget Church 80 Main St. Manchester, CT followed by burial in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.
