Obituary of John McDonald

John J. McDonald, 90, the husband of Geraldine Y. (Kreft) McDonald, of Montour Falls, NY and most recently Manchester, CT ,died on Saturday (January 29, 2011) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT. John was born in Syracuse, NY, the son of Joseph and Mary (O'Brien) McDonald. He received his Bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and his Masters in Hospital Administration from Columbia University. He was the founding administrator of Falmouth Hospital, Falmouth, MA and served there from 1960 - 1967 and later was the Hospital Administrator for the Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, NY. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. John was a member of the Rotary Club of Watkins Glen, was a local admission representative for West Point and was honored as a member of the Odessa-Montour Falls Hall of Fame and for many years was a lay reader at St. Benedict Church, Odessa. Besides his wife, John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law John J. McDonald, Jr. and Debi of Winthrop, MA and his daughter and son-in-law Kathleen M. and Glen Koehler of Manchester ;his grandchildren Natalia McDonald, Emily McDonald Koehler, Abigail McDonald Koehler and Nicholas McDonald Johannessen and his nephews Herb Gstalder and his wife Bobbie, James Sparkes and his wife Karen and Roger Gstalder. John was predeceased by his daughter Suzanne Johannessen, his brother William McDonald and his sisters Claire Sparkes and Mary Jane Gstalder. Funeral service will be held on Friday (2/4) at 11:00 from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 at St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester followed by burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10:00 - 11:00. A memorial service in New York will be announced at a later date.
