Obituary of Lionel Plante

Lionel J. (Lee) Plante, Jr. of Manchester, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT on Thursday, October 07, 2010. He was born in Providence, RI on March 19, 1930 to the late Lionel J. Plante, Sr. and Dorothy (Whelan) Plante. Lee was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Gloria (McManus) Plante. They were married on June 2, 1956. They moved to Manchester in 1966. Lee served honorably in the U.S. Army from January 1949 through November 1952. He was stationed for much of that time in Germany. He enjoyed a variety of jobs, prior to going to work for the U.S. Department of Defense. He retired as a Contract Administrator after a long and successful career. He was a long-time member of the Army-Navy Club. As a young man, Lee enjoyed playing hockey. Later, he enjoyed bowling and golf, and played on various leagues for many years. He loved music, and had a beautiful singing voice. Lee had a very generous heart for those in need. He quietly contributed to many charities, especially those that benefited children. Lee is survived by five children, Roger Plante and his girlfriend, Dawn Melo of Manchester, Steven Plante of Kansas City, MO, Michelle Gonzalez and her husband Jay of South Windsor, The Rev. Denise Terry of Ft. Myers, FL, and Giselle Schochet and her husband Brian of South Windsor. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew Kissman and Christopher and Samantha Gonzalez, as well as one brother, Robert Plante and his wife, Janice and one sister, Elaine Allen and her husband, Thomas, and four nieces and their families. John F. Tierney Funeral Home of 219 W. Center St., Manchester is in charge of arrangements. Calling hours will take place at the funeral home from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday (October 11th), and from 9:30 am to 10:30 AM on Tuesday. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 am from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Church of the Assumption, 29 S. Adams St., Manchester. Burial with military honors will take place in East Cemetery, E. Center St., Manchester following the Mass.
