Obituary of Gloria Hilton

Gloria Patricia (Carter) Hilton of Manchester passed away on Saturday September 25th after a 2 year illness with her family at her side. She was the widow of Burton E. Hilton III with whom she shared nearly 50 years of marriage. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a woman of grace and style. Gloria was born in Manchester to the late John and Julia (Meirwinska) Carter. She attended Manchester schools and graduated from Manchester High. When her children were young, she and Burton moved back to Manchester to raise their family. She was a long time volunteer giving service to the Highland Park School PTA, Lutz Children's Museum, and Manchester Memorial Hospital. She was a talented seamstress and crafter and devoted many hours to knitting hats and sewing clothes for premature babies and sewing Baptismal bibs for St. James Church where she was a lifetime parishioner. Gloria was an Anglophile and enjoyed the many trips that she took with her husband to England and Europe. She was a great reader, especially enjoying mysteries and biographies and was an ace at crossword puzzles. Her death has left a hole in the hearts of her children: daughters Candace Hilton-Rang and her husband Ralf, Melissa Sullivan and her husband Paul, and son Burton E. Hilton IV and his wife Celeste. She also leaves her 10 beloved grandchildren; Alexander, Hannah, and Bethany Rang; Paul Jr., Meghan, Mallory, and Brendan Sullivan; Nicholas, Alec, and Grace Hilton. Gloria also leaves her devoted sister, Mary Jane Carter. She leaves a host of friends among them her lifelong friend Elaine Barbero, dear friend and fellow bargain hunter Doris Bensen , and the ladies of The Bridge Group, especially Pat Reault who showed her care and concern to the end. Funeral service will be held on Friday (October 1st) at 9:15 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester followed by burial in St. James Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8. Memorial gifts may be sent to The Manchester Scholarship Foundation, 20 Hartford Road, Manchester, CT 06040. The family would like to thank the infusion of nurses at the DeQuattro Center and the AMU nurses and aides at Manchester Memorial for the loving care they Gloria during her frequent appointments.
