Savin Zavarella, 101, of Manchester, the husband of 72 years to the late Lillian (Pedini) Zavarella died Sunday (July 11, 2010) at Hartford Hospital, after a very brief illness. Born in Pratola, Peligna, Italy on July 11, 1909, his death occurred on his 101st birthday. He was a longtime resident of East Hartford and Manchester, a graduate of Hartford High, and UCONN where he lettered in football, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1946 he founded Pilot Co. Inc., a mfg. business which he ran for over 60 years. His business was his livelihood, creating many jobs over the years for his family, friends and anyone who needed jobs. He was the backbone of his family and lived a long and healthy life, his only extended stay in the hospital was to be his last. Savin was deeply involved with NHRA Drag Racing. With his family, he campaigned some 9 cars over 5 decades with numerous wins including U.S. Nationals. He collaborated with many drag racing greats, such as "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and Jack Merkel. Involved with every aspect, he was owner, crew chief, engineer, and welder fabricator. He touched many lives in comp eliminator. An accomplished golfer, Savin was a long time member of Manchester Country Club, sometimes playing three days a week and walked the course well into his eighties. In many respects he definitely raises the bar for everyone. He is survived by his children Elaine Fyler of Manchester, Mary Lou Pantaleo of Manchester, and Ronald Zavarella and his wife Marisa of Woodstock Valley and Toronto, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was predeceased by his son Richard S. Zavarella, his grandson Richie, four brothers and three sisters. A graveside service will be held on Friday (July 16th) at 11 am at St. James Cemetery Broad St. Manchester. Family and friends may call at the John F.
