Life's journey ended peacefully for Stanley E. Zatkowski, Sr., on April 9, 2010, at the age of 90 at Crestfield/Fenwood Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Zatkowski was the husband of Phyllis (Orlowski) for over 64 years and a life long Manchester resident. After enlisting in the Air Force, he volunteered to transfer into the Army Infantry and became a second lieutenant. He was a WWII veteran, returning home from fighting and being injured in Italy, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. During his recuperation, he chose to help others accept and adjust to their life changing injuries while at Walter Reed Hospital, and proceeded to continue that encouragement and assistance at the Veterans' Administration where he worked as a financial administrator for over thirty years. He was an active parishioner at Assumption Parish as lector, religious education teacher, choir member and member of the Holy Family Passionist Retreat League and Knights of Columbus, during the parish's early years. In addition to especially enjoying time with his family, he was involved in both senior bowling and golfing leagues. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, daughters Ann Matre and husband Gary of Manchester, Drs. Mary Z. Johnson and husband Kent of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and son, Stanley and wife Deborah, of Franklin, Massachusetts. "Grandpa Stashu" will also be lovingly missed by his grandchildren Katherine Dowd, Mary Powers, Daniel Johnson, Ellen Zatkowski, and Samuel Zatkowski, four great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester is in charge of the arrangements and the family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday (April 14th) from 9:30-11 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at Assumption Church 29 Adams Street South, Manchester at 11:30 am. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
