Obituary of John Roberts

John Lewis Roberts, "Jack", 82, of Manchester beloved husband of Lois Jean Dion-Roberts, passed away on Tuesday March 2, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Akron, Ohio the only child of Edgar and Minnie (Whittaker) Roberts, Jack was raised in Akron and graduated from East High School in June of 1945. Upon Graduation, he entered the USMC. After he was discharged; Jack returned to Akron and attended the University of Akron for one year. He then entered the USAF as an Aviation Cadet. Upon completion of pilot training, Jack was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF and married 2nd Lieutenant Margaret "Peggy" Lewis, an Army Nurse. Jack made a career of the USAF and retired in January of 1967. The family then moved to Manchester, CT and Jack continued his career in aviation as an Airline or Corporate Pilot. After having flown as a pilot for forty years, he was grounded in 1988 due to medical problems. Jack was a parishioner of St. Bartholomew Church and a member of the Army & Navy Club, Burtonwood Association, Manchester Senior Center, Masonic Organizations, Military Officers Association of America and a former member of the South Windsor Square Dance Club. He was predeceased by "Peggy", the mother of their four children, and son Gary, and is survived by two daughters, Christine and Jack Pendleton of Canby, OR; and Kathryn and Anthony Janco of Hudson, NH; and one son Dale and Kimberley Roberts of Trabuco Canyon, CA; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild and his spouse Lois Jean, the mother of three daughters, one of whom, Theresa Vontell predeceased her, and surviving, Mary Ann Altieri of Tulsa, OK; Donna and Rick Murphy of Bloomfield; and two sons, Michael and Lisa Dion of Manchester, and Mark Dion of Enfield; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held on Saturday (March 6th) at 9:15 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Bartholomew Church, Manchester. Burial with Military Honors will follow at East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5-8 pm, with a Masonic service during the calling hours.
