Obituary of Raymond Hickey

Raymond F. Hickey, 87, of Manchester, the husband of Mary E. (Pickett) Hickey, died Monday February 15, 2010 at Salmon Brook Center in Glastonbury. Born in Hartford November 20, 1922 he was the son of John and Ella Hickey. Ray graduated from St. Augustine's School and Bulkeley High School, Hartford. Ray served with distinction in the US Navy from 1942-1945. During World War II, Ray was a Pharmacist Mate in the US Naval Reserve, serving as a Hospital Corpsman attached to Twenty-Second Marines, Sixth Marine Division. During the recapture of Guam in the Marianas Islands on July 21, 1944, Ray was twice painfully wounded while evacuating Marines from front line combat positions, and for conspicuous gallantry was subsequently awarded the Silver Star Medal and two Purple Hearts. Ray was a proud life member of the Disabled American Veterans, and was employed by Aetna Insurance before his retirement in 1979. Despite the disabling injuries suffered in service to his country, he enjoyed playing golf with his sons and neighborhood friends and was a member of Manchester Country Club for many years, as well as enjoying numerous duckpin bowling leagues and tournaments. He loved all his dogs over the years, particularly his beloved greyhounds. He was predeceased by his brothers John Hickey and William Hickey, his sister Eileen Dolan and his daughter Jean. He leaves to miss him very much, his wife Mary and sons Tim Hickey and his wife Patricia Lindsay Hickey of Florida, Daniel Hickey of Manchester, William Hickey and his wife Sherry DiBella of East Hampton, and Chris Hickey and his wife Georgia of East Hartford. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Mrs. John Hickey and Mrs. William Hickey of Manchester and many nieces and nephews. The family extends our heartfelt thanks to the staff, nurses, and aides at Salmon Brook for the wonderful care. There are no calling hours.
