Obituary of Nicholas Duva

Nicholas F. Duva, 84, of East Hartford, beloved husband of Mabel Duva, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 9, 1925, in Hartford. The son of the late Joseph Duva and Rose (Sanzo) Duva. He lived in Manchester for 41 years before moving to East Hartford. He attended Buckley High School before transferring to trade school. On February 22, 1944, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and was trained at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. He proudly served in World War II with the 280th Engineers Combat Battalion through three campaigns, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes Battle of the Bulge. During this time, he was attached to the 3rd Army, 9th Army and lastly the 16th Corps before he was honorably discharged on March 13, 1946. After the service he worked in Hartford's Underwood Typewriter Co. until 1965. He then worked for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation for 22 years before retiring on August 1, 1989. Nicholas enjoyed attending his 280th Army reunions, had a passionate love for all animals, but mostly enjoyed his dogs. Most importantly, he will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his loving wife Mabel of 52, years he is survived by his family, five daughters and two sons. Charlene and George Atkins of Andover, Vicki Whitney and fiancé, Dan Dougan, of Tolland, Sandy and Bill Pillard of Tolland, JoAnn and Dan Martin of Coventry, Nicholas and Robin Duva of East Hartford, Anthony and Susan Duva and expected grandson of Marlborough, and Renee and Eric Sudarsky of Marlborough; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Constance Catalano of Bristol, and Marie and Tilson Lacy of Florida. He is predeceased by his brother, William Duva; and two grandsons, Joseph Duva and Dalton Duva. Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 15, from 6-8 p.m., at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester, CT. A celebration service will be held on February 16, 2010, at 10 a.m., St. Christopher's Church, 538 Brewer St., East Hartford. Burial with Military honors will follow at the Veterans Memorial Field on Hillstown Road in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Hearts, P O Box 171 Cromwell, CT 06416.
