Obituary of Edward Gicewicz

The Reverend Edward P. Gicewicz, CM, died at St. Joseph's Residence, Enfield on March 17, 2009. He was 96 years old. Born in Bellows Falls, VT on January 28, 1913, he was the son of the late John Gicewicz and Felicia Markowska Gicewicz. Father Gicewicz was ordained a Vincentian priest on September 11, 1938. He was a teacher and Director of Students at St John Kanty Prep in Erie, PA, until 1942. Father Gicewicz was a United States Air Corps Chaplain for the 6th Air Force in Panama until 1946 when he returned to teach at St. John Kanty Prep. He served as a United States Air Force Chaplain in Denver, CO, Spokane, Washington, and Yokota, Japan, from 1950 to 1953. In 1953 he received a Doctorate in Education from the University of Denver, and again, he returned to teaching at St. John Kanty Prep, Erie, PA. Father Gicewicz became Principal of the school in 1956 and stayed there until 1963, when he was appointed Vice-Provincial for the Congregation of the Mission. In 1967 he accepted the position of mission preacher at Whitestone, NY, where he remained until he became Pastor of SS Cyril & Methodius Parish in Lisbon Falls, ME, in 1976. From 1982 until 1989 Father Gicewicz was the Parochial Vicar at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Brooklyn, NY. From 1990 he resided at St. Peter's in Concord, NH, until he moved to St. Joseph's Residence in Enfield. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Residence, 1365 Enfield St, Enfield on Friday, March 20th from 2-7 p.m. A Vigil Service for Father Gicewicz will be held at the St. Joseph's Residence Chapel on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 21st in the St. Joseph's Residence Chapel at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial with military honors in the Vincentian Community Plot at St. Michael's Cemetery, Derby.
