Obituary of Elizabeth Viara

Elizabeth (Betty) Viara, age 87, died surrounded by love March 18, 2009, at home in Manchester, CT following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 30, 1921, in Bloomfield, CT to the late William and Mary MacInnis. She graduated from Wethersfield High School. Betty is a retired employee of the former Southern New England Telephone Company. After retirement she worked several years at Sears Roebuck, Highland Park School and volunteered in classrooms and the Penny Saver all in Manchester. Betty was a devout parishioner of Assumption church for fifty years Betty is survived by two sons Robert Viara and his wife Mary Jane of Manchester, David Viara and his wife Sally of Pawcatuck and a daughter- in- law Judith Viara of Florida. She leaves her precious grandchildren Karen and Eddie Pyznar, Lori and Chris Morris, Christine and Tom Zapala, Matt, Ben, Lizzie, Andy, Eric, Katie and Michael Viara. She was also a devoted great-grandmother to Nicole, Amanda, Matthew, Kaylie, Dustin and Ava. Betty is survived by two sisters, Ginny Chouinard and Alice Taylor and preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Viara Sr, a son Kenneth Viara Jr and a brother William MacInnis Jr A special thank you to Helen Dumond of North Central Hospice who guided us with her gentle hands, her calmness and unwavering support. Grandma Betty had a special connection to children and spent many hours volunteering in classrooms. She would show up at games, family celebrations, classrooms, or one of her son's childhood friends with those famous grandma Betty cookies. Betty's center of her life was her family. There was never a time that she was not there for all of us, and we have all learned how to be a better person because of her unconditional love for us. She had a keen gift of knowing when one of us needed that extra tender loving care that she was so good at giving. Her biggest joy in her life was watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. She was such a generous and loving person who was always there to give rides, bake cookies, have sock wars, clean a house, make your favorite dinner or just sit for hours with a sick child. All her life she was our shoulder to lean on so it was a privilege and an honor to be her shoulder these last weeks of her life. Our family will forever feel blessed and lucky that she was our mother, mother in law, grandmother, and great grandmother.
